| dc.description.abstract | This thesis will explore the connection between German and South African literature, focusing on three seminal German texts by Büchner, Goethe and Kafka, and their adapted South African productions. Through a detailed analysis, this thesis will identify the key similarities and differences between the original German texts and their adaptations, offering insights into why specific elements were added, altered, or omitted in the adaptations. These shifts not only reflect artistic choices but also engage with broader historical and political contexts that have shaped both Europe and Africa. By examining these similarities and changes, the thesis reveals the overlooked link between the political and historical events of the two continents. It argues that the lasting consequences of the European colonisation and influence are echoed in the social and political issues that continue to affect the African continent today. | |
