Abstract

Chronic inflammation of the periodontium is known as periodontal disease. The inflammation can be contained only within gingival connective tissue or can progress, leading to the loss of gingival connective tissue and alveolar bone. Lately, periodontal disease is considered as a co-morbidity of diabetes mellitus (Polak, Sanui et al., 2020). Though studies that have assessed the relationship of periodontal status with the glycemic control in type 1 diabetes mellitus adolescents, such studies have not been conducted in South Africa.
