The highlight of the conference was the keynote address delivered by prominent historian professor Shula Marks. Professor Marks is professor in Southern African History Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies at the University of London. In her outline of the "historical roots of national health systems;" prof Marks told the well attended conference that recommendations for a free national health service, made as early as 19944, were abandoned by the then Smuts government, even before the Nationalists came into power.Item Rectors call on Turfloop to stop using force(University of the Western Cape, 1987) University of the Western CapeBackground: The University of the Western Cape, together with four other universities have called on the administration of the University of the North (Turfloop) “to avoid the use of force and coercion against students.” In a joint statement issued by the rectors of the universities of Western Cape, Wits, Natal, Rhodes and Cape Town, the rectors that interference by outside agencies in the affairs of a university jeopardized the functioning of the institution.Item The unity of the student mass is an important factor in our fight for justice(University of the Western Cape, 1987) University of the Western CapeBackground: Twenty-six academic staff members, in a statement to the Rector last week, have expressed their concern about the clash which took place between two student groups on campus recently. The clash occurred when members of the BSSP and AZASM held a meeting on campus which was disrupted by members of SANSCO and the SRC. The reason given for the disruption was that the BSSP and AZASM were banned from campus because they did not adhere to the principles of non-racialism.Item UWC conferences on education, history and culture for the people(University of the Western Cape, 1987) University of the Western CapeBackground: In attempt to find the best possible ways to implement practical work, the Physical Science Department is presently experimenting with new methods of making practicals more meaningful and testing practical knowledge of students. This effort is in keeping with the University’s continuous search for relevant and more exciting ways of learning. Constantly subjected to propaganda against the ANC, many delegates were not quite expecting to meet people of the highest calibre. They did not expect such openness and a preparedness to talk. They did not expect to find that the leader of the NAC delegation, Mr Thabo Mbeki would outstrip any politician that they had ever met in this country.Item Elections a sham!(University of the Western Cape, 1988) University of the Western CapeBackground: Participations in the forthcoming elections will mean participating in the management of “our own oppression”, according to the rector of UWC, Professor Jakes Gerwel. This month this nation if aced with something which purports to be an extension of democracy while it entrenches Apartheid”, he said. “Apartheid means minority rule while democracy means majority rule,” he said. He told the meeting that he would continue to call on people not to vote, for as long as the government continued calling on people to participate in racist elections.Item Exams to proceed(University of the Western Cape, 1988) University of the Western CapeBackground: The semester examinations set to start on May 23 will continue as scheduled. This was confirmed by the University’s administration and the SRC after students at the faculty meetings overwhelmingly rejected calls for rescheduling of the examinations. Further proposals were that the mid-year vacation be shortened by a week or that the exams be postponed next term. The faculty meetings were held after complaints were received by the SRC about congested examination schedules and incomplete academic programmes because of the boycotts during last term.Item UWC wins first round against De Klerk. Will it have to lead the next?(University of the Western Cape, 1988) University of the Western CapeBackground: UWC has won the first round in the fight against the De Klerk conditions. A full bench of the Cape Supreme Court has declared the subsidy-linked disciplinary conditions on the university to be invalid. The conditions required universities to restrict political activism by their students and staff members and to report disruptions and other violations to the government. In a short judgement ten days ago, Mr Justice Howie said the reasons for the decision would be formulated as soon as possible. The judgement followed a joint application by UWC and UCT against the subsidy conditions imposed in October last year.Item Exciting new discovery in UWC sperm reserach(University of the Western Cape, 1991) University of the Western CapeBackground: PART-TIME Physiology Phd students Mr Brain Wilson has discovered an unusual sperm structure in the Foam Nest Frog (Chiromantis Xeromapelina). The sperm's structure differes from that of other frogs in that is has a coiled head, in the shape of a bed spring, and has two tails. The coiled head feature is in total contrast to the shape sperm belonging to a common frog such as the Platanna (Xenopus), where the sperm head cigar- shapedItem Future options for SA to go public(University of the Western Cape, 1992) University of the Western CapeBackground : The Mont Fleur scenarios- the culmination of a year- long investigation into political, social and economic options for South Africa - will culminate in press launch at Jan Smuts airport on August 27. The project was initiated by the Institute for social development's Prof Pieter Le Roux and other ISD staff and involved intensive discussion and debate by 21 to educationists, business, economists and development workers.Item Small business outreach helps community(1992) University of the Western CapeBackground: This project forms part of one of the modules of Business Economics at the third-year level where commerce students under the guidances of academic staff are used for counselling small business. According to co-ordinator Mr Etienna Mentour, the project is unique to UWC as it is the only University that offers this module as a credit bearer. The project has existed since 1989, with its primary aim to support entrepreneurs in disadvantaged and poor sections of the community by providing managerial assistance to them.Item UDUSA resolves on education change(Universty of the Western Cape, 1992) University of the Western CapeBackground: RESOLUTIONS taken at the recent Union of Democratic University Staff Associations (UDUSA) congress clearly demonstrated the organization's intentions to develop an alternative model of education. On democratizing universities, UDUSA resolved to secure fading for research into models and approaches to internally democratize universities, as well as to investigate options for regional post-secondary education governance structures.Item Fees increases kept to a minimum(University of the Western Cape, 1992) University of the Western CapeBackground: Tuition fees at the University of the Western Cape will be increased by 10 percent for 1993, while residence fees will go up by 3,75 percent. Announced after a meeting of the UWC Council, these increases come at a time when fee increases at major institutions are expected to be in the region of 15 to 20 percent.
