dc.description.abstract | Linguists have been interested in the study of language change for quite some time now. The current language debates regarding language change focus dominantly on language varieties and their inclusion in the classroom. Studies have shown that varieties of a language are often marginalised and not given enough recognition in formal contexts. Subsequently, the use of dialects in essays is regarded as a sign of informalisation under the influence of dialects. Drawing on ideas of demarginalising, destigmatising and recognising dialect forms in classroom teaching, this thesis aimed to examine the extent to which Afrikaans-speaking learners’ writing is influenced by Kaaps as well as how teachers, in the absence of formal guidelines, currently handle the use of Kaaps in learner essays. A mixed methodology was employed to gather data from Grade 10 Afrikaans pupils and educators at Lavender Hill High School. The data was collected through two questionnaires: an essay question for the learners and an electronic questionnaire for the educators. The datasets were analysed using variational markers in Kaaps, corpus linguistic methods as well as sociolinguistics. The results yielded that learners’ essays show signs of informalisation whereby grammatical features such as codeswitching between Afrikaans and English are the most common. Educators regarded the use of dialect forms in essays as unacceptable. Suggestions have been made on how to integrate dialect forms in the classroom and this firstly requires a change in attitude from educators. It also requires an awareness of dialect variation. | |
