Abstract

This study explored the nature of mental health stigma within communities and its impact on mothers of children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. A qualitative research design was employed, using purposive and snowball sampling to recruit ten mothers of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Data were collected through semi-structured, face-to-face interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that mothers frequently encountered judgement and stigma from both community members and within their own families. These negative experiences significantly influenced their attitudes towards treatment and, in some cases, contributed to the decision to discontinue their child’s pharmacological intervention. The study highlights the role of social stigma in shaping treatment decisions and underscores the need for greater mental health awareness and support for caregivers.
