This calendar and its illustrations serve to highlight the plight of the Cape Flats wetlands. Two species, Nymphaea capensis (water lily) and Nymphoides indica (geelwateruintjie), no longer occur in this region, while both species of Aponogeton (waterblommetjie) are fast disappearing. By contrast, species such as Typha capensis (bulrush) and the introduced Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) have become problem invasives. The other species featured here all occur in various parts of the Cape Flats and as such are not threatened.
