UWC Botanical Calendar

The UWC Botanica Calendars were produced to illustrate the diversity of fauna growing in the Cape Flats region in the Western Cape province of South Africa, especially the Cape Flats Nature Reserve bordering the university's main campus. The Cape Flats Nature Reserve was proclaimed in 1978 and during this time the University has endeavoured to promote conservation especially of lowland systems in a belief that conservation can contribute in a meaningful way to the quality of life. From slow beginnings and through productions such as this annual calendar, the nucleus of an environmental education unit has been formed. The Environmental Education Unit has launched several community-orientated programmes covering environmental education, environmental conservation and indigenous horticulture. Chief aims of the Unit are to promote community upgrading through indigenous greening projects, to conduct environmental education programmes based in local natural veld and serving local communities, and to contribute to high quality urban and regional planning through appropriate environmental input.
