Item The factors associated with school transport to get to educational institutions in South Africa.(University of the Western Cape, 2024) Mlonyeni, Sisipho SinovuyoSchool transportation has been a major challenge for learners in South Africa. Although transportation infrastructure has improved since the end of apartheid, learners are still experiencing issues with the means of transport to get to school. This study aims to identify the factors associated with school transport to educational institutions in South Africa. The study used secondary data from the 2018 General Household Survey which was collected by Stats SA. The dependent variables used in the study were means of transport. time taken to get to school and reason for not attending the nearest institution. Additionally, the independent variables were population group, gender, province, income sources, geography type, employment status and level of education. Various statistical methods were used to analyse the factors associated with learner transport, which included univariate and bivariate analysis as well as multinomial logistic regression for the study to look into the different variables. The key findings of the study revealed that learners, who came from households where the head of household did not have a stable income or was unemployed, had to rely on walking or use public transportation. In contrast, learners who came from households with more stable incomes, and where the head of household was employed, relied more on using a private car or walking to school since they could have been living near the educational institution. Learners in urban areas typically walked to school or used public transport since the schools were within walking distance, and if they were far, they used other modes of transport, such as buses, taxis, or private cars. These modes of transport were easily accessible for learners in urban areas compared to learners living in rural areas. To address these challenges, policymakers should advise the government at the local district level, NGOs, religious affiliations, and other stakeholders to make available reliable and safe transportation options for all learners in the different provinces.
