Item Diffracting diffractive readings of texts as methodology: Some propositions(Taylor & Francis, 2019-01-30) Bozalek, Vivienne; Murrisa, KarinRe-turning to our experiences of putting a diffractive methodology to work ourselves, as well as engaging with the writings of Donna Haraway and Karen Barad, we produce some propositions regarding a diffractive methodology for researchers to consider. Postqualitative research disrupts the idea that educationalists can be given tools or techniques to investigate the world objectively, independently and at an ontological distance from the researcher. Therefore, avoiding prescription and a rush to application, we take up Stephanie Springgay’s proposal (drawing mainly on Whitehead) to diffract a non-hierarchical list of propositions through the text that disrupt the theory/practice binary and activate a self-organising potential for adopting a diffractive methodology in research. We use a diffractive methodology (spatial and temporal), theory and practice as a way of activating experimentation with the affirmative method of diffractively reading texts, oeuvres and philosophies through one another. Propositions generated as part of a published example of a re-view of three books on posthuman non-representational research are also diffracted through the text. These two entangled ‘sets’ of propositions creatively engage with the in/determinate direction of what a diffractive methodology might look like in practice, while at the same time being cognisant of the complex discussions about the appropriateness of referring to ‘methods’ or ‘methodologies’ as human-centred activities.Item Post philosophies and the doing of inquiry: Webinars and webing sessions become a special issue(s)(SAGE Publications, 2023) Kuby, Candace R.; Bozalek, VivienneIn this guest co-editors’ introduction to the special issue(s) titled “Post Philosophies and the Doing of Inquiry,” the authors share the backstory to the webinar series, information about the webinars and how to locate the recordings, and how WEBing sessions with our (former) students came from the webinar series. A list of articles and article titles for the special issue(s) are also included.Item Wild sea swimming as a slow intimacy: towards reconfiguring scholarship(Lectito, 2024) Bozalek, Vivienne; Shefer, TamaraOur oceanic swimming-writing-reading together practice coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and subsequent lockdown in South Africa. Awash with vulnerability, precarity, and isolation, oceanic swimming-writing-reading became one of the few ways in which we, as three academics from different higher education institutions, found respite in a practice of care for ourselves and others. Curious as to whether swimming and free writing could materialise alternative creative scholarly practices, we began to meet regularly to swim, write, read and think together with theoretical perspectives that subscribe to a feminist relational ontology. This article turns to visual and written narratives generated during this period and building on them, considers health and wellbeing at both subjective and planetary levels. Our global southern location articulates with these themes in very particular ways – access, risk and embodiment in relation to seas, beaches and littoral zones. South Africa remains haunted by the continuing geopolitical effects of its slave, colonial, apartheid, and neoliberal past and current contexts of global capitalism that seep into encounters with the ocean. Our swimming-writing-thinking is a reminder of our relationalities with and response-abilities for the hydrocommons as the measure of human, other species and the planet’s capacity to survive and flourish.
