Development in education has been a focus area for decades, with theorists and researchers pursuing
ways in which to understand the varying outcomes achieved in the South African higher education
landscape. This is especially relevant in a context where education is identified as a key determinant for
the promise of a better life for individuals. In South Africa, however, acquiring a tertiary education is
not a straightforward pursuit.
