Abstract

Malnutrition and specifically undernutrition is a worldwide problem and in South Africa, it is most prevalent among black and colored children in rural, peri-urban, and in low socioeconomic areas. Available data on the nutritional status of primary school children indicate that acute and chronic malnutrition is evident. The presidential PSNP was started in September 1994 to address hunger in schoolchildren and to improve the learning environment. As part of a comprehensive integrated nutrition program, the PSNP should include a significant nutrition education component. This would allow a more long-term and sustainable effect on the health and well-being of children and the population at large
