dc.description.abstractThe arts, in particular dance programmes, is one area where there is a need for disability inclusion due to ongoing exclusive practices and a resultant lack of participation of people with disabilities. There appears to be a dearth of literature on how inclusive dance is experienced and a need to better understand the experiences of inclusivity. The aim of this study was therefore to explore and describe the perceptions and experiences of dancers who participate in an inclusive dance company. The objectives were: to explore and describe dancers’ perceptions and experiences regarding the approach to dance practices, teaching principles, and training used in an inclusive dance company; to explore and describe dancers’ perceptions and experiences regarding their personal and professional development since being members of the company; to explore and describe dancers’ perceptions and experiences regarding adaptations made in dancing together and to explore and describe dancers’ perceptions and experiences about the value of inclusive dance practices. The study took place at an Arts Theatre Centre, with an associate inclusive dance company. The researcher employed a qualitative research approach and exploratory-descriptive research design and utilised purposive sampling in particular, snowball sampling to select participants for the study.
