dc.description.abstractBackground: Development of a public orthodontic service plan requires baseline epidemiological data on the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need of a population (Nelson, 1999). Currently, this data is lacking for the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. Establishing the need for orthodontic treatment requires both an objective and subjective assessment of malocclusion (Tiabah & Al-Hummayani, 2019). Orthodontic treatment need indices are epidemiological tools that can assist in gathering this information (Jarvinen, 2001). The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need is such an index with proven reliability and validity (Beglin et al. 2001; Younis et al. 1997). Aim: This study aimed to determine the orthodontic treatment need of high school children within the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality
