dc.description.abstract | Traumatic brain injury (TBI) incidence is higher in sub-Saharan Africa compared to the global average. Evidence regarding TBI incidence, epidemiology, in-hospital physiotherapy management and functional outcomes of TBI cases in South Africa is minimal especially so in the Western Cape where violence and road traffic accidents are high. Aims: To determine and describe the epidemiology (incidence, aetiology, clinical outcomes, morbidity and mortality) of and the in-hospital physiotherapy management for TBI patients admitted to a central hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. To evaluate and describe the impact of the in-hospital physiotherapy management on the mortality and morbidity (documented functional outcomes at discharge) of the TBI patients. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective hospital-based study reviewing patient records was conducted. | en |
