| dc.description.abstract | Maternal substance use often involves complex issues, particularly the separation of mothers from their children during the reunification period. For most, this separation weakens the mother–child relationship, making it increasingly difficult for them to bond after treatment. This study explored how in-patient mothers perceived and experienced the reunification process, as well as the challenges encountered. Grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological systems theory, the study confirmed how layers of a person’s environment shape their experiences. A qualitative research approach was used, with data gathered through semi-structured interviews with selected in-patient mothers undergoing the reunification process. Social workers engaged in the reunification process were also interviewed as key informants to offer deeper insight into the hardships experienced by these mothers. The study was conducted in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. | |
