Abstract

Clinical placement tracking systems are used in nursing education to track student clinical placements by ensuring accurate and safe record keeping for professional accreditation. In the Western Cape, nursing students are placed in clinical placements, spanning 2 594 clinical hours, in over 76 healthcare facilities across various geographical locations in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. In 2018, a web-based clinical placement tracking system, namely SONIA, was implemented by a nursing school at a selected university in the Western Cape, to manage students’ clinical placements and track clinical hours for accurate and safe record keeping. The implementation of SONIA has not been without challenges, with anecdotal evidence alluding to mixed views on the use and effectiveness of SONIA. To date the implementation of SONIA has not been evaluated for feasibility and effectiveness in tracking clinical placements. The aim of this study was to evaluate the implementation of the web-based clinical tracking system namely SONIA. The objectives were to evaluate the implementation of SONIA in terms of inputs, processes, and products; and to explore the expectations of the stakeholders of clinical placement tracking and web- based clinical system.
