Abstract

The changing patterns of oral diseases in industrialized countries (decrease in the prevalence of dental caries and less increase in periodontal disease) are strongly attributed to the shift of dental services from mainly curative to preventive dental services. The idea of using lay health workers within the community can contribute substantially to improved oral health. Thus, the adoption of a mir team approach in oral health plans is to be advocated. Due to the inadequate number of oral health personnel in Lesotho they need to be assisted by other health care workers. Nurses, by virtue of their extended social contact in hospitals. clinics and the community form the most suitable group of personnel to take this role.
