The increasing evolution of antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria, coupled with emergence of multidrug resistance and extreme drug resistance poses great threat to public health worldwide. Such bacteria evolving resistance traits include Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes tuberculosis, a second ranked cause of death from a single infectious disease, causing approximately 1.5 million deaths annually. While effective antibiotics exist against drug-susceptible Mtb, extensively and multi drug-resistant strains render most conventional treatments ineffective, with novel antibiotics in development. This has prompted researchers and scientists to bioprospect from natural reservoirs such as venoms of snakes.
