Abstract
The study focussed on and identified the role of the South African Government's policies in the development and promotion of an SMME strategy that would benefit the majority of the inhabitants of this country. This strategy took into consideration South Africa's entry into the global market and the concomitant constraints that this posed for the development of the said strategy. The study also tried to analyse the role of the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) pro-actively and objectively within the scope of the study.
