Abstract
This thesis examines the impact of the public service new disciplinary code and procedure unto the effective application of workplace discipline,
and employees conduct. This was done by looking at the legal framework within which the application of workplace discipline takes place.
Furthermore, the different managerial approaches applicable to workplace discipline were examined. Hereby the incorrect approach to the
application of workplace was outlined, and thereafter the correct approach was discussed. Within the context of the correct approach to workplace
Discipline, supervisory guidelines for the effective application of workplace discipline was discussed.
The application of workplace discipline within the public service, with reference to the previous and new disciplinary code and procedures, were

Relating to the situation within the department of health were outlined. The aforementioned information was mainly obtained throughout the study
of secondary data gleaned from published and unpublished materials. The data collection for this study was mainly through self-administered
Questionnaires, and unstructured interviews. The self-administered questionnaires were sent to the six provincial hospitals within the southern
Capel karoo region in the western cape. The questionnaires were completed by 19 line-managers of the mentioned hospitals.
