Integrating information skills into the curriculum: an action research investigation at an ex-House of Representatives high school

Abstract

South Africa in 1994 was the year of the first democratic general election in its history. It was also the watershed year in education with the publication of the Draft White Paper on Education and Training. There were moves afoot to restructure education which inspired the researcher to examine the existing instructional role of the school librarian. The traditional role of the school library seen as a "repository" and the traditional roles of the school librarian as "gatekeeper", teaching "isolated" programmes called "book education" were called into question by the study which the researcher undertook at an ex-House of Representatives high school.
