Abstract
Performance management (PM) in a work setting is seen as process within the broader human
resource management (HRM) system that involves people in the attempt to secure the best work
performance from the individuals, the working groups and that of the entire work society.
Various factors play a role in the performance of nurse managers in South Africa. Since the
determination and the simultaneous implementation in 2007 of the occupational specific
dispensation (OSD) job descriptions for nurses working in the government setting in South
Africa, the understanding of what the required work performance for the Assistant Nurse
Manager (ANM) was, remained unclear, as there was no PM framework that directed the work
performance of the ANM in the Western Cape Province (WCP).
