Creating access to oral indigenous knowledge for research and development through the implementation of the national recordal system
(Universty of the Western Cape, 2024) Van Wyk, Carol Judith; Zinn, Sandra
Local communities have developed and cultivated significant knowledge about plants to use for food and medicine over time and across generations. This is known as indigenous knowledge (IK). Studies indicate that indigenous knowledge can help advance scientific research and find new drugs and medications. Official recognition of this in South Africa is demonstrated by the Indigenous Knowledge Policy (2004) and the Protection, Promotion, Development and Management of Indigenous Knowledge Act, No. 6 of 2019. A lack of adequate documentation, however, renders it difficult to access indigenous knowledge and make it available for research and development (R&D).
