    Health for the wealthy or health for all ?

    The NAMDA conference attended by over 200 delegates from all over the country attracted wide spread interest from the medical and dental professions. The highlight of the conference was the keynote address delivered by prominent historian professor Shula Marks. Professor Marks is professor in Southern African History Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies at the University of London. In her outline of the "historical roots of national health systems;" prof Marks told the well attended conference that recommendations for a free national health service, made as early as 19944, were abandoned by the then Smuts government, even before the Nationalists came into power.
