Item The use of smartphone apps in clinical practice: A survey of South African physiotherapists(OpenJournals Publishing AOSIS (Pty) Ltd, 2020) Rowe, Michael; Sauls, BereniceIn 2017, there were more than 325 000 health-related and medical apps in the app stores of all major mobile operating systems, with some of these apps having been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times (Pohl 2017). In the context of smartphones, ‘apps’ describe mobile applications designed to provide extra functionality for users, including browsing the web, listening to audio, watching video and creating new content (Ravenek & Alvarez 2016). Twenty per cent of American smartphone users report having downloaded a health-related app, the most popular of which are used to monitor exercise, diet and weight (Lupton 2014).Item Using video to learn practical techniques in physiotherapy education(South African Medical Association, 2020) Rowe, Michael; Sauls, BereniceThe traditional approach to developing practical skills in physiotherapy education presents several challenges. Because of larger class sizes, it is difficult for all students to see clearly what is being demonstrated, and because of limited staff numbers, lecturers cannot necessarily spend enough time with students to observe and correct their techniques.[1] This study aimed to explore an alternative means of instruction that is emerging as an area of interest in physiotherapy education. Video-based learning is increasingly being used in programmes with high levels of practical content to free up time in the classroom for lecturers to help students to problem solve instead. Video-based learning allows students to learn a practical technique using only online resources for instruction and demonstration components.
