Item Analysis of selected allegorical Quranic verses with specific reference to S?rat Y?suf: A hermeneutic approach(University of the Western Cape, 2019) Tantoush, Mansour Ali; Saidi, Mustapha; Mohamed, Yasien AlliArabic is the language of the Holy Qur'an, which was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who in turn dictates it to His companions. The Prophet's companions did not encounter any difficulty in the understanding and comprehension of the Quranic verses simply because the Qur'an was revealed in a language variety with which they have been quite familiar. Yet, the companions of the prophet differ in their understanding of the Qur'an. Their understanding may vary according to their competencies and their closeness to the prophet. In addition, the Qur'an includes verses that appear to be contradictory. Some verses of the Qur'an, for instance, may imply that man is free to select either the path of faith or the path of blasphemy.Item The concept of the Sufi Saintly Miracle: A Literary Approach(University of Western cape, 2020) Abdul Nabi, Saleh Ali; Saidi, Mustaphastudy analyses the concept of al-Kar?mah al-S?f?yah (the Sufi Saintly Miracle) in both its religious and literary dimensions. The researcher will shed more light on this genre of narrative literary phenomena by developing its definition and placing it in the social and historical context of the Sufi thought as a whole. Many communities in the Islamic world embrace and practice the Sufi doctrine and also believe in the ??f? Sheikhs saintly miracles and its paranormal aspects, which they also consider to be parallel in its sacredness to the miracles of the Prophets. Furthermore, in this study the researcher will not only focus on the religious significance of the saintly miracle but also on their literary approach and aesthetic dimensions. In fact many of the contemporary Arab scholars and Litterateurs categorize this narrative discourse to fall under the cloak of al-Adab al-aj?ib? (miraculous literature) due to the nature of its narrative style and structure from which it achieves its goals, such as: Myth Legend Superstition Storytelling, etc. The study will be mainly qualitative. It is a content analysis study in the sense that the researcher will analyse the stylistic, formal and rhetorical techniques of the saintly miracles discourse with specific reference to extracts taken from al- Sheikh al-Hassan al- Shadili and al-Sheikh Abdelssalam Bin Machich. The study will use an eclectic theoretical and conceptual framework which combines the historical approach with the reception theory.Item A critical and an analytical study of sadeq ai-naihoum’s novel min makkah ilā hunā (from Mecca to here) deconstructive and structural approaches(University of the Western Cape, 2023) Hassan, Fakhri; Saidi, MustaphaBackground: The novel is considered to be one of the most famous and distinguished prosaic literary arts in the current era, which makes it the focus and target of researchers, writers, thinkers, critics and scholars. Due to the birth of the Arab novel as a modern literary art at the beginning of the last century it was able to absorb the contradictions of Arab societies. Its birth was closely linked to the flourishing of the national awareness of Arab thinkers and writers, as it is considered a reflection of political, social, cultural and purely humanitarian patterns and conditions encompassing all its problems, concerns and ambitions. The novel, according to (Genevieve Idt, 110:1986) is considered to be an interconnected social institution, close in its connection with reality in all its economic, political and social forms. Georg Lukács is considered one of the first critics who offered beneficial and meaningful theorisation about the fictional work through his book "The Theory of the Novel" issued in 1920. He regarded it as an epic pattern which simultaneously depicts a number of human characters, as well as the social and natural environment in which these characters interact amongst each other, that is, it depicts life completely.Item Diversity and cultural pluralism with regard to globalization and the universality of the message of Islam: A study on the fundamentals of discourse in a diverse and multiplex world(University of the Western Cape, 2022) Sheta, Ahmed Moustafa Mohamed; Saidi, MustaphaGlobalization refers to the process of changing the world into a monolithic system for all who live in it and integrating peoples' economic, social, and intellectual activities regardless of religion, culture, nationality, or ethnicity. The challenge of globalization stems from the perspective that it is in opposition to the realities of plurality and diversity that humankind demonstrates. Races, civilizations, faiths, and passions differ, and it is impossible to remove all the inequalities and distinctions that create the image of human life at any given time. If history cannot be reduced to a single shape, culture, or language, what is the need to reduce the world's diversity to a single style, and what may explain such a trend or theory?Item "Grammatical controversy on the temporality of the imperfect tense in the Qur?nic text" Is it Murab (declinable) or Mabn? (indeclinable)?(University of the Western Cape, 2018) Hassan, Fakhri; Saidi, MustaphaThis research discusses the temporality of Al-Fil Al-Mo??ri (present tense) in Arabic in terms of structure and case endings. It also focuses on the time of the imperfect tense and how it is affected by the Adaw?t (particles) and justification as well as the meaning, context and the purpose of the sentence. The study also investigates the controversial issues on finding a standardized definition of the actual imperfect tense in order to distinguish it from the outwardly one. It also investigates the changes which the imperfect tense undergoes when preceded by particles and how they change the case endings from Mabn? (Indicative) into Murab apocopate (to be Jussive or Subjunctive). Another focus is investigating the reason why the tense of the verb that comes after particles of negation, prohibition, justification and denial is always imperfect not perfect or future, regardless of the context and the purpose of the text, and the reason as to why this rule applies to all Qur'?nic verses which contradict this rule when being parsed. In addition, it uses semiotics to explain the imperfect tense in the Qur'?nic verses and investigates the effectiveness of applying abstention and assembly to distinguish between the tense and it's meaning in the Qur'?nic text. This can help to determine the actual time of the tense in the Qur'?nic text which in turn helps to parse the imperfect tense correctly and to justify why there is a case ending which contradicts the grammar rules. The correct parsing of the imperfect tense, including indicative, subjunctive and jussive, will pave the way for more attempts to rectify the interpretation of the Qur'?nic verses which create controversy. This can be achieved by presenting the verses which contradict the rules of parsing, making hypotheses, analyzing them and then parsing them in a logical way utilizing an analytical approach.Item Ibn Arabi's Sufi and poetic experiences (through his collection of mystical poems Tarjuman al-Ashwaq)(University of the Western Cape, 2005) Saidi, Mustapha; Mohamed, Yasien; Dept. of Linguistics, Language and Communication; Faculty of ArtsThis study is a theoretical research concerning Ibn Arabi's Sufi experience and his philosophy of the "unity of being" (also his poetical talent). I therefore adopted the historical and analytical methodologies to analyse and reply on the questions and suggestions I have raised in this paper. Both of the methodologies reveal the actual status of the Sufism of Ibn Arabi who came with a challenging sufi doctrine. Also, in the theoretical methodology I attempt to define Sufism by giving a panoramic history of it. I have also researched Ibn Arabi's status amongst his contemporaries for example, Al-Hallaj and Ibn Al Farid, and how they influenced him as a Sufi thinker during this time.In the analytical study I explore the poems "Tarjuman al Ashwaq" of Ibn Arabi, of which I have selected some poems to study analytically. Through this I discovered Ibn Arabi's Sufi inclinations and the criticisms of various literary scholars, theologians, philosophers and also sufi thinkers, both from the East and the West. In this analysis I have also focused on the artistic value of the poetry which he utilized to promote his own doctrine "the unity of being."Item Islamic belief: Imam Malik's doctrine of faith and practice(2007) Rhil, Salim Faraj Salih; Mohamed, Yasien; Saidi, MustaphaImam Malik b. Anas (d. 179 A.H.) is an important intellectual figure in Islam. He is the author of the first hadith collection, the Muwatta, and is the founder of one of the four major Sunni schools of law. His contribution towards formulating a distinct legal school allows millions of Muslims daily to perform their daily rituals of worship. Previous research, however, has not given enough attention to a systematic study of his beliefs. This study intends to address this shortcoming. My thesis examines the belief of imam Malik, particularly his concept of faith and the external expression thereof. It examines the first two eras of Islam, that of the Companions and Followers, which preceded him and their influence on his methodology of formulating his theological and legal views. It further looks at his approach to the textual evidences and his attitude towards speculative reasoning (kalam) regarding theological issues. This study further aims to verify the statements attributed to imam Malik regarding what constitutes correct faith and whether it increases or decreases. It also looks at the conflicting statements attributed to him regarding the increase and decrease of faith and tries to resolve them. Furthermore, it sources reliable biographical information on imam Malik to determine his attitude towards the diverse theological trends such as the Qadarites and Murjiites prevalent during his time. In addition, the study compares the views of imam Malik with that of the other three founders of the Sunni Sunni legal schools.Item The study of Andalusian Muwasha??t: a literary and artistic approach"(University of the Western Cape, 2020) Balat, Samah Mohamed; Saidi, MustaphaThis thesis aims at presenting a comprehensive study, through which more will be learnt about the art of the Andalusian Muwasha??t. This is a study of their artistic structure, types, and poetic purposes. The art of the Muwasha??t was different in form and rhythm from the classic Arabic poem, because the Muwasha??t had multi meters and rhymes, and it relied on the musical rhythm. Besides, the poetic language of the Muwasha??t was based on both classical and vernacular Arabic. The Muwasha??t was invented by the Andalusian poets to keep pace with the musical development in Andalusia, the researcher will shed light on aesthetic methods, and the poetic styles that characterized the Muwasha??t as an innovative poetic art which had strong ties with the music and singing, and showing the impact of the Andalusian environment on the development of this art. The art of the Muwasha??t left a distinguished mark on the Arabic poetry and music, especially in the Maghreb and North Africa where a lot of musical schools and poets still pay a lot of attention to such type of that Andalusian art. The continuous interest in this art, until current days, strongly motivated the researcher to proceed with this study.Item The conceptualization and application of Qab?lah (Clan) in the Somali context: A linguistic, social and political analysis of Somali media and online resources(University of the Western Cape, 2016) Azir, Mohaud Mohamed; Saidi, Mustapha; Ellis, WilliamThis thesis examines the concept of qab?lah (tribe/clan) and its social and political influence on Somali society. It firstly looks at the general meaning of qab?lah in Arab culture and its more specific meaning in Somali culture. It further looks at the historical development of Somali tribalism and the role it has played in undermining Somali national unity. Furthermore, the study highlights the reasons why Somalis are dependent on the tribal system such as poverty, ignorance, colonialism and foreign intervention etc. Lastly, the study discusses the effects of tribalism on both Somali civil life and the Somali Diaspora. The media is one of the sources the study will utilize.Item The implementation of Islamic perspectives on nutrition in the context of Muslim faith-based organisations in Cape Town(University of the Western Cape, 2018) Kagee, Mohammed Luqmaan; Saidi, Mustapha; Conradie, Ernst M.South African debates on food security address a wide range of issues related to the production, the distribution and the consumption of food in the context of deep concerns over the impact of poverty, unemployment and inequality. One aspect of such debates is on the need for nutritious food amidst hunger, malnutrition, obesity and the prevalence of diabetes. This study will investigate the Islamic theological injunctions and guidelines that govern the production, the different facets of distribution and the consumption of food in Muslim communities. There are numerous theological injunctions from the Quran and prophetic traditions (?ad?th) guiding the Muslim community in relation to food security. These include injunctions around the need to provide nutritious food. The study will assess the programmes of five Muslim faith-based organisations in the Cape Town Metropolitan Area, working in the field of food security and more specifically, feeding schemes. The food programmes of these organisations will be described, analysed and assessed in order to establish whether, and to what extent, the Islamic injunctions on nutrition are implemented, given various constraints. This will require attention to the policies, the strategies and the practices associated with such feeding schemes.Item The implementation of Islamic perspectives on nutrition in the context of Muslim faith-based organisations in Cape Town(University of the Western Cape, 2018) Kagee, Mohammed Luqmaan; Saidi, Mustapha; Conradie, Ernst M.South African debates on food security address a wide range of issues related to the production, the distribution and the consumption of food in the context of deep concerns over the impact of poverty, unemployment and inequality. This study investigated overindulgence from the perspective of Islamic Studies. In the Muslim tradition, overindulgence is regarded as a vice which is contrasted with the virtue of temperance in the Quran and the Hadith. There is a long tradition of Muslim virtue ethics that draws from Greek philosophy but also from medieval Arabic sources. This study required an overview of such literature in order to profile contemporary discourse on the virtue of temperance against this historical background. Even though the virtue of temperance is praised, and the vice of overindulgence is frowned upon in Muslim communities, this does preclude overindulgence amongst Muslims, not even in the holy month of Ramadan. This may be understood in terms of the classic problem of moral formation where it is recognised that virtue cannot be taught. Knowledge of the good does not suffice for the realisation of the good. In terms of this study, this begs the question what kind of considerations play a role in motivating some Muslims to overindulge despite Muslim teachings in this regard, even amidst contexts of food insecurity. In this study, I investigated the perceptions of such considerations found within Muslim households associated with the Rylands and Belhar mosques. This required a Qualitative Approach where Semi-structured Interviews were conducted with around 10 households associated with each of these mosques. The local Imam in each case was asked to select ten such households of good moral standing. These interviews were recorded and analysed in order to describe the perceptions amongst Muslims of good moral standing with regards to the considerations that play a role in habits of over-indulgence. The study found several determinants of overindulgence within the selected Muslim households associated with the Rylands and Belhar mosques namely, food insecurity, spiritual apathy, emotional eating, conspicuous and hedonistic consumption as well as social environmental cues. However, food insecurity was exclusive to the Muslim community of Belhar who are distinctive from the inhabitants of Rylands in terms of social-economic status as well as race. This community is largely of Malay origin and is disadvantaged economically compared to their counterparts who are predominantly of Indian descent and enjoy a high-income status. The study found in both communities that Ramadan; a month of restraint, self-reflection, devotion, and worship had been turned into a month of indulgence and unhealthy eating. It was perceived that most Muslims squeeze a five-course meal in the few hours they can eat. The research further revealed that such individuals to be very meticulous of what type of food they consume when breaking their fast and would prefer oily fried foods to healthy food. This causes weight gain, health complications and sluggishness which stands in the way of worship. It was concluded that the majority gain weight due to their lifestyles. With regards to the implementation of moral formation, the study revealed self-discipline, leading by example and parents, educators and leaders playing an active role to be key in the formation of good morals. Additionally, the study found good moral formation can be achieved through habituation. Finally, the study found that the major constraints to moderate and healthy eating to be lack of self-discipline, the absence of virtue ethical education in Islamic institutions and finally Muslim leaders have prioritized the ?all aspect of food and in the interim have forgotten to preach the importance of wholesome pure foods. The explanations offered in this study indicated the importance of the virtue of temperance in the fight against obesity and in the attainment of physical and spiritual wellbeing. This virtue which is a mean between two vices, namely self-indulgence and insensibility help in the journey towards a higher lifestyle and helps release all the dynamic forces that spiritually weigh down those in affluent as well as food insecure communities.Item The virtue of temperance and the vice of overindulgence: A case study of perceptions in Muslim households(University of the Western Cape, 2018) ?assan, Sumaya Abdulkadir; Conradie, Ernst M.; Saidi, MustaphaOverindulgence is widely regarded as a serious social problem in South Africa leading to obesity and associated medical and psychological issues.
