Pharmacogenomics in pharmacy education: A scoping review protocol
(University of the Western Cape, 2024) Hoffman, Nicole
Introduction: Clinical implementation of pharmacogenomics (PGx) can improve patient health outcome and prevent adverse drug reactions. Pharmacists have been identified as a key member of the interprofessional healthcare team to successfully implement PGx in practice. However, they need to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to facilitate implementation. Objective: This scoping review aims to scope and describe literature on PGx in pharmacy education. Pharmacy education in this scoping review includes education presented by higher education institutions which encompass undergraduate education, postgraduate education and research as well as continuing education. Method: One reviewer will review the abstracts and titles of the articles for inclusion in the scoping review using Covidence®. Another reviewer will validate the selection. Experimental and observational studies as well as quantitative and qualitative studies that have been conducted globally from 2000 to 2023 will be reviewed. Guidelines and expert opinions will also be included. Only literature related to pharmacy education and available in English will be included. The following databases will be searched: PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCOhost), Scopus, ERIC, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Further, grey literature will be search and the reference lists of the included articles will also be searched. Data collection and analysis: A standardised data collection tool will be used for data collection. The results will be reported in a narrative report according to identified themes in tables and figures. Results will be descriptive in nature and tables will be used to report on findings. Conclusion: This scoping review aims to report on pharmacogenomics in pharmacy education globally.
