Understanding the factors affecting the management of asthma in Eswatini

Abstract

Background: Asthma is a common chronic respiratory condition contributing to the burden of non-communicable diseases worldwide and affecting approximately 300 million people globally. Regular use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) is the recommended regimen for asthma management, however, the underuse or misuse of the recommended ICS results in poor control of the condition and threatens future public health gains. Despite the presence of guidelines, management of asthma varies among health care practitioners. Asthma management practices are influenced by prescriber’s knowledge and experience, as well as economic and health system factors. This study provides an overview of asthma management practices in Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland) using various methodological approaches to gain an understanding of asthma management in the country. Aim and Objectives: To evaluate factors affecting current practices in the management of asthma in Eswatini, and after a stakeholders’ consultative meeting, to make recommendations on how quality of care could be improved.
