Item Inrigtingsversorging van alkoholiste met spesifieke verwysing na die Avalon behandelingsentrum(University of the Western Cape, 1991) Kivedo, Basil David; du Toit, J.B.The purpose of this investigation is to determine how a group of selected institutionalized alcoholics react to a broad-spectrum model in regard to their perception of treatment, re-integration into community life and general rehabilitation. The method that was employed to achieve this goal is fivefold. Firstly alcoholics were placed within a theoretical perspective by focusing on the etiology, nature, extent and consequences thereof. Secondly the existing methods of treatment and the existing facilities available in South Africa were investigated. These two objectives were realized by means of a comprehensive literature study. Thirdly an empirical investigation was carried out of the policy and philosophical approach as well as the application of the multi-disciplinary methods of treatment at the Avalon Treatment Centre. Information in this regard was gained during visits to the Centre by means of personal interviews with the team applying the treatment as well as the respondents reacted to the treatment model by means of case studies. Data was obtained by conducting unstructured in-depth interviews with the respondents. By this means respondents were identified in terms of their personality configuration, marital, scholastic, professional, religious and socio-economic status. The respondents' drinking behaviour is focused on in order to determine patterns and tendencies in the development of the respondents' drinking problem. The researcher also followed up the respondents' behaviour over a period of two years to determine their re-integration within the community as well as their total rehabilitation. Valuable information about the respondents was gained during group therapy sessions and also meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous by means of participant observation. As member of Alcoholics Anonymous the researcher was part of the group and on an equal footing with the respondents. The advantage this held was that the researcher was accepted by the group and information was passed on without inhibitions. Fifthly the findings, conclusions and recommendations resulting from the whole investigation are set out. From the investigation it would appear that the problem of alcoholism, especially in South Africa is serious and escalating. In the light of this, there is a growing need for effective treatment. In spite of intensive treatment with complete abstinence general, degenerate as the aim of the treatment, the respondents, in because of denial, resistance to treatment, personality and social configuration and also poor re-integration, reacted poorly to treatment. The present specifically be sharpened establishment study shows that institutional treatment and as applied by the Avalon Treatment Centre can in order to be more effective. The of a more realistic perception of alcoholism among alcoholics per se is foremost. A more "enlightened" view of alcoholism is pleaded in terms of which alcoholism would be viewed as a non-stigmatised illness responding to treatment. The possibility that there will be a greater willingness on the part of alcoholics to submit to treatment is visualised. A more positive image of treatment centres should be created while the problem of alcoholism must be approached with a greater measure of sensitivity. Treatment should be of such a nature that it should emphasize and reinforce a positive self-image, pride in oneself and dignity. A more extensive programme of treatment that would include an exploratory project and longitudinal research is pleaded. The desirability of involving other key figures, important persons in the alcoholics life, and institutions as well as community organizations proposed with The traditional emphasis should helping fall services is re-orientation and education in order on sensitising, to achieve a more positive perception and understanding of alcoholism within the community. This study will hopefully stimulate further research in this direction. I; Hendricks, F.S; Faculty of ArtsNEGATION is a semantic feature found mainly on clause/sentence level. Negation in Afrikaans is characterised by (a) NEG1-forms represented by various particles which are located within the major constituents of the sentence (eg. in the auxiliary, as part of the subject-nominal etc.), and (b) NEG2 that is the closing particle (= NIE2) in sentence-final position. It focuses on the representation of identity and sexuality to posit an image of the individual (specifically the black woman) and finds that ambivalence is displayed; on the one hand established conceptions on identity, specifically race, and sexuality are presented, whilst on the other hand, such notions are contested and / or broadened in the texts. The analysis is grounded in a quest for corresponding features in the (post)colonial experiences reflected in the literatures of two former Dutch colonies, South Africa and Surinam. The findings of two studies conducted in the Cape Town area highlight the particular historical circumstances and factors that gave rise to the incidence of passing in certain areas. The article also draws on theorizing about the phenomenon in African-American literature for an analysis of issues of identity, race and gender. It is argued that passing / playing white challenges racially based constructions of identity in apartheid South Africa and that the texts explore these aspects in a multi-faceted way. S.V. Petersen's magazine stories S.V. Petersen (1914-1987) is known for his poetry and is regarded as the first black Afrikaans poet. He started his writing career with a number of short stories and sketches that were published in journals and magazines. These texts give a rare insight into so-called "coloured" urban and rural life during the 1940s. The article places the texts within the socio-political context of their time and gives an overview of characteristic themes and linguistic features.Item Current manifestation of trauma experienced during forced removals under apartheid: interviews with a former VLAKTE inhabitant(University of the Western Cape, 2010) Kannemeyer, Renee Allison Hector; Krog, AntjieMuch has been researched in South Africa about the trauma of losing ones home, ones community and rebuilding ones life in a new environment. Several books have been published tracking the lives of the forcibly removed and their responses to leaving District Six. My research focuses on a different group namely those who had been forcibly removed from the centre of Stellenbosch, called Die Vlakte during that time.Living and working with and among people who have experienced this removal, I was keen to research whether the impact of the trauma is currently manifesting in this specific community and if so, what the symptoms would be. This qualitative inquiry focuses on one particular individual, Mr. Hilton Biscombe. I selected him because he, who experienced the removal as a teenager, spent most of his later life determinedly collecting stories and documents relating to this incident. Mr.Biscombe is also the only person of whom I am aware who responded personally through compiling a book, making a DVD, writing poetry as well as an autobiography relating to this event. My inquiry into the ways trauma manifests in a narrative, will be based on two interviews: one conducted by a white man from the University of Stellenbosch thirty years after the event; and another interview, six years later, conducted by myself. Our understanding of trauma is usually associated with a death or injury or the possibility thereof, but it could also include the victims response to extreme fear, serious harm or threat to family members. According to van der Merwe and Vienings, people also become traumatized when witnessing harm, physical violence or death or the sudden loss or destruction of a victims home (van der Merwe & Vienings, 2001).So the issue of trauma is not in question, nor the fact that forced removals cause trauma. I am exploring testimony in the form of interviews for possible current manifestations of this trauma thirty-six years down the line.Item John Miles, Kroniek uit die doofpot, polisieroman : n dekonstruktiewe leesoefening(University of the Western Cape, 2012) Van Reenen, Sandra Elizabeth; Van Zyl, W.J.This dissertation concerns itself primarily with deconstruction theory and a number of readings of this novel within the ambit of deconstruction. According to Derrida there is not a single deconstruction and in response to this remark this study undertakes more than one deconstructive reading of the same novel. These different readings are introduced by a preliminary reading of the paratext and a cryptic reading which acknowledges the fragmentary nature of this novel. Hereafter a deconstruction of the novel follows in two phases, of which the first phase focuses on the process of its production. The non-fictitious documents on which the novel is based are revealed and exposed as building blocks during this reading. The second phase of the deconstructive reading is divided into two parts. The first part is based on Derridas dredging machine metaphor which introduces and illustrates the concept of random reading. During this phase the novel is acknowledged and read as an intertextual reconstruction. The non-fictitious documents are acknowledged as an archive within the context of recent as well as less recent South African history which serves as intertexts along with other texts. The second part of the second phase involves a reading of this novel as an anti- Hegelian text. Hegels concepts of the state and law are brought into the reading process. The reading focuses on the Apartheid State, the police force as an instrument of the state, and offers a critique on the discriminatory laws and the Constitution of the time period within which the novel is contextualised. Item S sjibbolet: n intertekstuele lees(University of Pretoria, 2012) van Wyk, StewardThis article pursues an intertextual reading of Adam Small's collection of poetry S sjibbolet ("Say shibboleth"). The collection is read alongside texts that refer to "shibboleth" in their titles i.e. works by Paul Celan, Jacques Derrida and Doris Salcedo. The analysis draws on the readings that these texts provide of the Biblical passage in Judges 12 and the possibilities for further analysis that they open up of Small's title poem and collection as well as the insights that they provide into his poetic and discursive utterances with regard to apartheid and Afrikaners. Corresponding features in the writing of Celan and Small are further explored to enlighten their views on language and poetics within past and present contexts. Petersen(Stellenbosch University, 2012) van Wyk, Steward"Net domastrant vir spite": Moments in the life history of S.V. Petersen Relatively little is known about the life story of the Afrikaans poet S.V. Petersen. The entries in literary histories concentrate on his literary work and contain little information on his life and times. A few recent critical studies supplement these with new perspectives on his writing and provide interesting background material and context. However, the human being Petersen in his immediate surroundings and contact with family and friends is still sketched only in broad outlines. The aim of this article is to broaden the existing biographical information and scholarship on S.V. Petersen and his writing by recounting a few moments in his life history, verified with archival documents, letters, interviews and other texts and related to his writing. The article starts with a discussion of issues pertaining to life writing. Factual representation and narration of a life history are some of these issues. The accomplished and prolific Afrikaans biographer (the late) J.C. Kannemeyer's approach to his subject matter and methodology illuminates these issues. The article proceeds with Petersen's search for his roots and genealogy. His travels to Sweden, where his ancestors presumably hail from, and his research into archival records are highlighted. This forms the basis for a poem like "Suiderkruis" and other texts which deal with his emotions about his ancestry. Other facts about his family life and history are also recounted. In the following section the articles deals with Petersen's struggles with the apartheid authorities to resist eviction from his residence in Rondebosch under the Group Areas Act. Anecdotes about the history of the house, e.g. the origin of the name and how he eventually obtained a permit, are retold. A connection is made with Petersen's love of the pastoral lyric. The views of other critics on this matter are briefly discussed. The section ends with the story of the tragic events that form the basis for the poem"Na die ongelu". The last section of the article covers the friendship between Petersen and his friend and fellow poet P.J. Philander. Details of their friendship are uncovered in a number of letters that Petersen wrote to Philander in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This correspondence is held at the University of Stellenbosch Archives. The value of these letters lies in the fact that it shows how one individual witnesses a range of personal and public matters of that particular time. As representative of a particular grouping of coloured intelligentsia this is interesting. It gives insight into the way Petersen perceives the social and political events of this era, e.g. the political patronage and victimisation in the Department of Coloured Affairs. It also gives a view on how Petersen assessed his own writing and his views on colleagues and friends. Of particular importance is the glimpse into his personality and his frail mental condition. His love of travelling is related to aspects of his personality. The article expounds on his purported arrogance and insecurity and balances this with the views expressed in eulogies as well as personal interviews with his son, nephew and his long-time friend Richard van der Ross. The balanced portrayal that Van der Ross gives of Petersen is complemented by comparing it with his own experiences as told in his memoirs. Being those of someone who was a contemporary of Petersen's and from a similar background, these experiences make interesting reading and shed light on Petersen's. From this emerges a nuanced portrait of the poet that will be useful in further studies of Petersen, his life and times and his writing.Item "Harlekijns in den bonten stoet"? 'n Herbesoek aan die vroee komiese poesie in Afrikaans(SAVN, 2013) Van Zyl, WiumHarlequins in a pied parade? A revisit to early comic poetry in Afrikaans Some South African newspapers and individuals considered the so-called Patriot movement or First Afrikaans Language Movements efforts to transform the taal into a literary medium a joke. Quite ironically, part of the movements cultural campaign was based on the production and encouragement of poetical jokes and light verse. This article firstly deals with the reception and evaluation of this corpus of humorous poems in the history of Afrikaans literature, secondly it explores the relations of this cultural manifestation with the context of 19th century European cultural nationalism and thirdly examins its connections with the broader Dutch and international literary landscape of the time.
