Hierdie ouers kan probleme ondervind om ’n effektiewe benadering tot die grootmaak van kinders te ontwikkel, en hulle kan dit ’n uitdaging vind om ’n kind met gehoorverlies met selfvertroue groot te maak (Calderon, Bargones & Sidman 1998). Studies dui aan dat interaksie tussen gesinslede, familiehulpbronne en ondersteuningsdienste alle areas van die gesinslewe beïnvloed wanneer daar ’n kind met ’n gehoorverlies in die familie is. Boonop ondervind horende ouers nie net uitdagings ten opsigte van hul kind se gehoorverlies nie, maar is daar sprake van verdere uitdagings soos stres, kommunikasie, maatskaplike ondersteuning en toegang tot inligting. Verder beïnvloed gehoorverlies in kinders ouers se vertroue in hulle vermoë om ’n kind met gehoorverlies groot te maak.Item Human capabilities of South African parents who have children with developmental disabilities(Aosis, 2023) Magidigidi, Lumka; Roman, Nicolette V; Sonn, Inge KBackground: Parenting a child with a developmental disability (DD) has a substantial influence on the lives of the parents or caregivers, as well as on how the family operates. This is frequently because of the adjustments in some daily practices that are crucial for parents’ or caregivers’ human capabilities to provide for childcare. There is not enough research done on human capabilities of parents or children with DD in South Africa. Objectives: This study investigated the available support in improving the human capabilities of parents or caregivers with children with DD and the bodily health and bodily integrity human capabilities of parents or caregivers with children with DD. Method: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 11 parents or caregivers of children aged between 1 and 8 years old with DD. This study used snowball sampling. Thematic data analysis was chosen to analyse the data collected. Results: The results of the study indicate that participants have difficulties bringing up their children because of the emotional strain that goes along with parenting a child with DD. In addition, participants were not able to afford decent and satisfactory shelter and had limited access to good quality food because they could not afford it.Item Lessons learnt during covid-19 lockdown: A qualitative study of south african families(Elsevier, 2021-11) Donga, Gift T; Roman, Nicolette V; Adebiyi, Babatope OIn a pandemic, such as COVID-19, with every single person struggling to deal with the unknown, it is often within the family that support is found but it is also within the family that circumstances, contexts and behaviours could further drive the pandemic and where they struggle to cope. This is novel research in the South African context with no known information regarding family life during and post the pandemic. This study, therefore, explores the lessons learnt during COVID-19 by South African families. A qualitative approach was employed to guide the gathering and analysis of the data. Data were collected from a sample of 31 family members above the age of 18 years from communities of the Western Cape Province and analysed through thematic analysis. According to the participants interviewed some of the significant lessons learnt from the lockdown include hygiene and health consciousness, appreciation for family, valuing life, self-introspection, less dependency, remote working, and financial savings. The realisation of such lessons even post-pandemic has the potential of strengthening families to be a resource of coping and resilience during very difficult times at the same time, contributing to greater physical, social, and economic functioning of families across South Africa.Item The Negative Impacts of COVID-19 Containment Measures on South African Families - Overview and Recommendations(2021-03) Adebiyi, Babatope O; Roman, Nicolette V; Chinyakata, Rachel; Balogun, Tolulope V.The World Health Organization (WHO) reported various pneumonia cases (‘Coronavirus Disease 2019’ [COVID-19]) on 31 December 2019 in Wuhan City, China, which has spread to many countries, including South Africa. In response to this, the President of South Africa declared a state of national disaster on 15th March 2020, followed by introducing various COVID-19 containment measures to minimize the spread of the virus. This paper examines the negative impacts that COVID-19 containment measures may have had on the family as a unit of society and furthermore provides recommendations to mitigate the impacts of these measures. It can be concluded that COVID-19 containment measures, specifically the lockdown restrictions, would yield both short-term and long-term impacts on proper family functioning. Several families in South Africa have been impacted financially due to the closure of business which led to the temporary/ permanent unemployment of some breadwinners in the families. This also has had a cascading impact on the food security of families and their ability to afford other basic necessities. Distress as a result of financial challenges or failure to provide for the family alongside spending much time locked down together as a family has also led to violence in the family. This was further exacerbated by the fact that the victims were stuck with the abusers and some could not report or find help due to the restricted movements. Furthermore, since most institutions predominantly moved learning online, results indicated that the lockdown restrictions affected the ability of some individuals especially those from poor families to access formal education during the period due to the lack of digital devices and internet facilities. In order to mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 containment measures on the family, there is a need for collaborative efforts at intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, community and policy levels using the ecological framework.Item Predictors of student agency: the relationship between student agency, learning support and learning experiences in an interprofessional health science faculty.(University of the Western Cape, 2019) Roman, Nicolette V; Titus, SimoneThis study illustrates how student agency is formed based on the lecturer-student relationship, learning support and learning experiences in an interprofessional education environment. This study assessed the association of the lecturer-student relationship, learning support and learning experiences on student agency in an interprofessional health science faculty. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 266 conveniently sampled 3rd year students in a Faculty of Community and Health Sciences. The results of this study showed significant positive associations for student agency with student learning experiences (r=.292, p<0.001), the lecturer-student relationship (r=.333, p<0.001) and learning support (r=.209, p<0.001). Furthermore, the lecturer-student relationship was positively associated with learning support (r=.623, p<0.001) in an interprofessional health science faculty. This paper concludes that there are positive outcomes to interprofessional education practices through the development of student agency.Item The role of local government in promoting a sense of belonging as an aspect of social cohesion: A document analysis(UKZN, 2021) Khaile, Fundiswa T; Roman, Nicolette V; Davids, Gregory JLocal government in South Africa is expected to contribute towards efforts to realise the constitutional vision of building national unity, diversity, belonging, social justice and a cohesive society. Municipalities as spheres of government closest to communities are expected to contribute towards this constitutional vision by facilitating among other things a sense of belonging as an aspect of social cohesion. However, there is insufficient evidence of what and how municipalities should facilitate a sense of belonging as an aspect of social cohesion. Accordingly, this paper explores various government documents to determine what is envisaged for municipalities to facilitate a sense of belonging as an aspect of social cohesion. The study utilised a qualitative document analysis method to explore what government highlights as the role of a municipality pursuing social cohesion through the facilitation of a sense of belonging. The analysis indicates that most government documents do not provide explicit and coherent approaches and objectives to be pursued by municipalities to facilitate social cohesion and a sense of belonging.
