    MACRODONTIA: A brief overview and a case report of KBG syndrome

    Macrodontia is a dental condition where a tooth or group of teeth are abnormally larger than average. Functional and aesthetic discrepancies may arise in affected individuals resulting in lowering the quality of life. It has been noted that macrodontia is associated with several genetic and endocrine abnormalities. Among which, KBG syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by developmental and dental abnormalities. This case report provides a brief overview of the significance of macrodontia, along with presenting a case of KBG syndrome with atypical features in a South African, 16-year-old female. The dental manifestations are often overshadowed by other more conspicuous and complex syndromic features. Recognition of both the clinical and oral changes that occur in KBG syndrome facilitates accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of this condition. The authors highlight the importance for clinicians to be cognizant of the clinical implications of macrodontia.

    Osteogenesis imperfecta type III in South Africa: Psychosocial challenges

    Individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta type III (OI III) are severely physically disabled due to frequent fracturing. Their disability poses numerous barriers that challenge their social development. Despite these limitations, several affected persons are able to rise above these problems and achieve success in their personal and professional life. This outcome is directly relevant to their psychosocial development. The achievements of five individuals with OI III living in Cape Town are highlighted in this article, as well as the challenges that they have experienced and continue to experience in their daily lives. The authors intend to promulgate understanding of the psychosocial circumstances of affected persons, thereby facilitating the deployment of appropriate efforts and resources to address these challenges.

    ‘Recommendations for the development of a framework for radiological imaging studies during implant therapy in SA’

    Radiographic examination is an essential facet of dental implant therapy, and the success of this therapy depends on a suitable treatment based on adequate clinical and radiographic information. International organisational bodies have published guidelines on the use of radiographic imaging during implant therapy, but since the cone beam computed tomography modality became available, a need for the development of comprehensive imaging guidelines to limit the misuse of this modality became necessary. There is a lack of stringency regarding the recommendations and guidelines on radiographic imaging modalities used during implant therapy. This is due to variations in practice, experience, and socioeconomic factors. The most recent published global guidelines and recommendations and their relevance to dental implant therapy are described in this chapter.
